Mice were never a natural drawing tool — we just got used to them. The Apple Pencil restores the oldest design interface there is: a point you place exactly where you're looking. For the 2D half of CAD, that's transformative.

What the Pencil actually improves

  • Placement precision: a Pencil tip lands within a point or two of where you intend — finger taps are ~40× larger contact patches. Snapping still helps, but you fight it less.
  • Gesture separation: in a well-designed app the Pencil draws while fingers navigate — orbit with a finger mid-stroke without mode switching. This division of labor is impossible with a mouse.
  • Sketch flow: chaining lines and arcs feels like drafting; you keep visual attention on the geometry instead of a toolbar.
  • Comfort: an hour of sketching with a Pencil beats an hour of precision mousing, full stop.

A pencil-first workflow that works

  1. Rough with the Pencil: draw the profile approximately — speed over accuracy.
  2. Constrain the shape: apply coincident/tangent/symmetric so the topology is right (see constraints explained).
  3. Dimension to exact size: type the driving numbers; the sketch snaps to truth.
  4. Go 3D with your fingers: pull the fill into a solid, orbit, push/pull — touch is excellent at the 3D half.

Do you need a Pencil for iPad CAD?

No — everything works with fingers, and 3D manipulation is arguably better with touch. But for sketch-heavy work the Pencil is the single best accessory you can buy for a tablet CAD setup. Any Pencil generation helps; hover (Pencil 2 / Pro on supported iPads) adds a nice preview-before-touch for snapping.

Beyond sketching

The Pencil also shines for precise edge selection when filleting, tapping small constraint glyphs, and dragging dimension handles — anywhere targets get small. If you model on an iPad regularly, it pays for itself in un-mistapped selections alone.
